Winter Showshoe Trip Grand Marias, MN

February 23 - February 25

Let’s bundle up, throw on a pair of snowshoes and hit the North Shore. Join us for 3 days of adventure through a winter wonderland that you won’t witness any other time of year! Our journey will bring us into slot canyons, up gorges, and to the base of stunning, frozen waterfalls. We promise that this trip will change the way you think about winter!

  • Experience the North Shore by snowshoeing through frozen rivers, slot canyons, and gorges
  • Adventuring through an unseen landscape of snow and ice
  • Enjoy a warm, cozy campfire and snuggly bed at the Hungry Hippie Hostel after a day of snow and ice adventuring
  • Learn how to snowshoe so exploring doesn’t have to end in the summer

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 

Friday, Feb 23rd

Snowshoe Miles – 3 – 4 miles

10am – Meet at Tettegouche State Park Visitor Center

Meet for snacks and introductions while we get to know our gear and safety plan for the trip

11:30am -Temperance State Park (2 mile loop)

Take on some rolling hills while we get used to our snowshoes followed by some amazing views of Temperance River and the falls

2:00pm –  Ray Berglund Wayside (Onion River)

Snowshoe up the dramatic Onion River waterfall (1.5 miles) with amazing lake views from the top

4:00pm – Hungry Hippie Hostel

Head to Grand Marias to check into the hostel and snuggle up for a good nights rest

Day 2     

Saturday, Feb 24th – Snowshoe Miles – 5 to 6 miles

8:30am  – Blue Water Café

Meet for an optional breakfast in Grand Marais at the Blue Water Café

10:30am – Kadunce River Wayside 

Snowshoe up the 11 waterfalls of the Kadunce River (2.2 miles total)

12:00pm – Lunch Break (free time)

2:00 pm – Devil’s Track River

Snowshoe Devil’s Track Gorge and experience Barrier Falls from the river (3 miles total)

7:00pm – Hungry Hippie Hostel

Join us for a cozy fire overlooking Lake Superior and watch for the Northern Lights

Day 3

Sunday, Feb 25th

9:30am – Oberg Loop

Snowshoe to Oberg Loop in Lutsen with spectacular views of the inland Oberg Lake and Lake Superior (2,2 miles)

12pm Wrap up our trip & get excited for next year!

“Trips are subject to itinerary changes based on a variety of circumstances beyond our control, including, but not limited to permit or campsite availability, snowpack, river crossings, wildlife, park or land closures, and forest fires. The price of a hiking trip will never change due to itinerary changes. Payments are not refundable for itinerary changes or park or land closures. If a trip is cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control and no alternate itinerary is available a trip credit will be issued equal to the full amount paid minus any nonrefundable expenses incurred by the Company.”
